As part of the Public Comment Process for the proposed Forest Plan Revision, the Mormon Lake Fire Department would like to go on record as supporting Alternative A (No changes) to the current Forest Plan as provided at the following link http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/landmanagement/planning/?cid=stelprdb5334655 . We feel this is public land and should therefore be accessible for recreation, hunting, fishing, etc. We have plenty of 'quiet lands' and do not feel it serves the public interest to shut off access to the forest. Additionally, the potential for Wildland fire hazard is greatly increased, as numerous studies have shown, if our forest areas are not maintained. In order to respond to a Wildlands fire, we need access, as well as the roads that will allow us ingress and egress. Thanking you in advance for your consideration. We understand you have some concerns about closures and conditions of the forest. We just released the draft plan and the draft environmental impact statement. They are both available on our website (http://go.usa.gov/jHnY ) as are other supporting documents. For a quick orientation to the draft plan and DEIS, we suggest you take a look at the Reader’s Guide and the FAQ sheet. Also, Chapter 2 of the DEIS has a summary table that compares different topics by alternative. The January 20, 2014 PFAC meeting will provide an opportunity to talk with Vic Morfin about fire management as it relates to plan revision. In addition, public meetings are scheduled Jan. 14 (Flagstaff), Jan. 15 (Sedona), Jan 16 (Mogollon Rim Ranger District office), Feb. 24 (Flagstaff), Feb. 25 (Sedona), and Feb. 26 (Mogollon Rim RD office). Hours and locations are posted in the Reader’s Guide. We anticipate the official 90-day comment period for plan revision to start around December 20 and the official date will be posted on the forest website. Comments received during the 90-day comment period would be included in an official response-to-comments and the person or organization making the comment would have standing to appeal the final decision. We don’t expect the final decision to be made for at least a year. Please be aware that because we received your emails prior to the beginning of the 90-day comment period these are not considered official comments and do not provide you with standing to appeal.
