I urge the FS to take the following action, incorporating alternatives for this Herd Management Area Plan and Environmental Assessment (EA). Establish more genetically viable AMLs for the wild horses and burros living in this complex. The current proposal is too low to ensure genetically viable and sustainable populations. Since these herds live near Las Vegas, maintaining a viable population will also benefit ecotourism, as both our citizens and foreign visitors will be able to see the wild horses and burros, on the open range. Partner with the Spring Mountain Alliance (SMA) and other community members on a plan to humanely manage these horses, at viable levels. If necessary, the PZP fertility control would be the best solution, and SMA volunteer PZP darting teams are trained/certified to dart.. Maintain the wild horses and burros, where they are, leaving them within the Complex. Range improvements should be utilized, including expanding and repairing water sources. Stop all the roundups for the wild horses or burros in this complex. The current rounding up and stockpiling of 50,000 of our wild horses and burros is nothing short of a national disgrace. They belong on their federally protected lands and interference with them should be kept to an absolute minimum, ie. expanding and improving their range. A more sustainable, humane, and less costly management approach is needed for this Complex. I urge you to follow the comments above, thus protecting our wild horses and burros. Sincerely, R.
