Commenting on This Project

The Gilbert Creek Aspen Restoration project would restore aspen stands and improve forest health across approximately 7,217 acres on the North Slope of the Uinta Mountains. Treatments include mechanical and hand thinning, mastication, pile burning, prescribed fire, and riparian habitat improvements

The Forest Service welcomes your comments on the Gilbert Creek Aspen Restoration proposal located in Summit County, Utah and Uinta County, Wyoming. The project aims to improve wildlife habitat, support healthier forests and watersheds, and reduce the risk of uncharacteristic wildfires.

For project information, including the environmental analysis, maps and other project information please see the public project record at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r04/uinta-wasatch-cache/projects/299276.

The 14-day scoping period on the Proposed Action, Reliance on Analysis, and Draft Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact (DN and FONSI) represents an opportunity for the public to provide comments on the project.

The Fuels and Forest Health Emergency Action Determination (ESD) was established by a Secretarial Memo (1078-006) on April 4, 2025 and includes actions that relate to wildfire risk reduction and timber actions. This ESD includes the waiver of 36 CFR 218 pre-decisional administrative review. The Gilbert Creek Aspen Restoration Project is within the ESD area and meets the intent and actions covered by the determination. Therefore, this decision is not subject to the objection regulations found at 36 Code of Federal Regulations 218, subparts A and B.
