This project will conduct bulk sampling on the Anunnaki Mining Claim, with an expected excavation volume of approximately 222 cubic yards of material. Sampling will be conducted using a mini-excavator to excavate trenches. This project is not discretionary.
The Wild Rivers Ranger District of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is preparing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation to respond to a plan of operations for bulk sampling at the Anunnaki Mining Claim. The mining claim is located in Josephine County, Oregon in W½ of the NE¼ of the NW¼ of Section 19, Township 38 South, Range 8 West, Willamette Meridian.
The plan proposes exploratory testing and bulk sampling of alluvial material to determine the presence, grade, and extent of potential mineralization. Activities are limited to short-term evaluation only and do not constitute commercial production. The plan of operations is limited to bulk sampling of approximately 225 cubic yards and would require the use of a small excavator (5 to 8 ton class), one small portable, self-contained trommel and pick-up truck and recreational vehicle trailer for on-site sanitation.
All ground disturbing activities will occur within previously mined and historically disturbed upland tailings areas, outside active stream channels, outside flowing water with no in-stream work proposed. Additionally, activities will be a minimum of 300 feet from the ordinary high-water mark of the Illinois River. Access to the project site will occur on existing roads. All excavated material would be processed on site, and the site would be reclaimed.
The level of NEPA documentation anticipated is a categorical exclusion, and public input is being conducted to ascertain if there are other considerations that the Agency should consider. The project is not discretionary.
