Vegetation management on approximately 18,168 acres to move forest conditions toward historic range of variability and improve forest resilience to disturbance to reduce the likelihood of uncharacteristic large-scale loss of forest habitat.

The Forest Service values public participation. Communications from the public regarding this project, including commenters' names and contact information, will become part of the public record. Comments, including anonymous comments, will be accepted at any time. However, comments posted after the close of a designated comment period may not be able to be given full consideration. The Crate Vegetation Management Project (Crate Project) and Site-Specific Forest Plan Amendment Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and comment period letter, published on the Deschutes National Forest website are available for interested parties to review prior to commenting. The Crate Project was authorized to use the Secretary’s Memorandum 1078-006, the Fuels and Forest Health Emergency Situation Determination (ESD) under section 40807 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) on February 12, 2026. Under this emergency authority, the Crate Project draft EA was developed to consider only a proposed action and no action alternative in detail. The Final EA, decision and finding of no significant impact will not be subject to pre-decisional administrative review (Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2012 (Pub. L. 112-74) as implemented by Subparts A and B of 36 CFR part 218). The comment period for this project occurred 4/21/2026 through 5/21/2026.
