The USDA Forest Service has prepared an EA, FONSI and draft Decision Notice (DN) for the Petersburg and Wrangell Ranger Districts New Cabins project located on the Tongass National Forest. A legal notice is expected to publish on October 19, 2023, in the Petersburg Pilot, the newspaper of record.
The draft DN states the Responsible Officials are planning to implement the modified proposed action which identifies eight selected sites for cabin site development to increase public access and use, while reducing the cabin program's operations and maintenance costs. The proposed cabin sites are on 5 different islands - Mitkof and Kupreanof islands on the Petersburg Ranger District, and Wrangell, Zarembo and Etolin islands on the Wrangell Ranger District.
This project is subject to the Pre-decisional Administrative Review Process (Objection Process) pursuant to 36 CFR 218, subparts A and B. The EA and draft DN are available online at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=61944. A paper copy is also available for review at the front desks of the Petersburg and Wrangell Ranger Districts.
Objections will only be accepted from those who have previously submitted specific written comments regarding the proposed project during scoping or other designated opportunity for public comment in accordance with 36 CFR 218.5(a). Issues raised in objections must be based on previously submitted timely, specific written comments regarding the proposed project unless based on new information arising after the designated comment opportunities.
