Kensington Gold Mine Plan of Operations Amendment 1 #55533

Commenting on This Project

Opportunity to Object to the Kensington POA1 Project

The Tongass National Forest completed the draft Record of Decision (ROD) on July 9, 2021 for Plan of Operations Amendment 1 (POA1) for the Kensington Mine. The Draft decision, Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) and associated appendices are available, prior to final decision, for public review at:  https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=55533.  Notification of the availability of these documents was sent by email or letter on July 9, 2021 to those who previously requested to be included on the project mailing list or submitted specific written comments related to the project.

The Responsible Official intends to select the Proposed Action from the Plan of Operations Amendment 1 Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) as the Selected Alternative. The Final SEIS evaluates the Proposed Action - POA1, along with the No Action Alternative and other Action Alternatives. The other Action Alternatives include the development of a filtered tailings facility and a tailings treatment facility closure with reduced water, along with two optional waste rock storage facilities. The action alternatives are designed to achieve the purpose and need for action, while addressing issues raised by the public. Estimated effects of each alternative were analyzed and compared in terms of meeting the purpose and need and possible impacts to resources.

The Responsible Official for this project is M. Earl Stewart, Forest Supervisor. Paper copies of the Final SEIS and draft ROD and their appendices are available for review at the Juneau Ranger District. For additional information, contact Matthew Reece, Minerals Program Manager at 907-789-6274 or matthew.a.reece@usda.gov,
